Do Not Miss Stargzing Experience At This Place If You Are Visiting Ladakh

Ladakh: The Wrong Time of The Year

Ladakh is situated at a high altitude, far from the reach of toxic urban and industrial pollution. This makes it a perfect destination for people who love to explore the night sky, observe astronomical phenomenon or simply gaze at some shining stars, experiences that are almost impossible to have from urban clusters of south asia.

We went on our memorable trip to Ladakh this summar, in April 2025. However, to our surprise it was not yet summar for the Ladakhi people.

We landed in Leh with the magficent view of snow covered Himalayan ranges. We flew from a Delhi to Leh, a route popularly known as the most beautiful flight route in the country.

Leh surprised me with a cold breeze the moment I stepped out of the aircraft, a small A319. I did not anticipate temperatures that low.

But Leh was the warmest, we were about to step into a deadly winter in a couple of days! winter that I had never seen or experienced in person ever before.

We spent two days in Leh and then moved to the north crossing Khardung La towards Diskit: a bit colder environment that Leh.

The real winter was waiting for us at Pangong. on the forth day of our trip we started driving towards Pangong, and the moment we reached there, I could feel the breeze turning ice cold.

So cold, that using my phone by removing the hand gloves became a challenginig task. the fingers froze and I could not feel any sensation in them. i quickly sat back into our car & covered myself.

I could imagine how the night was going to be. After sleeping in a tent in diskit I was not ready for the ngiht at Pangong: a lake that was still freezing at nights in April.

The sun set, and I could very clearly see the challenges ahead: Breathing, Sleeping and Using Bathrooms for anything!

We could not sleep properly that night, and only waited for the morning so we can just run away from this place back to Leh.

In this entire episode of suffering bone chilling winter at this high altitude, we totally forgot about this stargazing opportunity. People come to experience this from far away, we heard some noise outside my tent but it did not occur to me or my father what could it be.

it was only in the morning that we realized what we have missed.

I shall be visiting Ladakh once again soon. This time during the Ladakhi summer, from June-September. And experience Ladakh very differently.
